Green Skills Class 10 Questions and Answers

Session 1: Sustainable Development

1. What is Sustainable Development?

2. What is the importance of Sustainable Development?

Answer: Sustainable development is important because it improves our quality of life while protecting the environment and natural resources for future generations.

The population and income of people are increasing, which has resulted in increased consumption of products and greater use of natural resources. If resources continue to be used without proper planning, future generations may face serious environmental problems.

Therefore, society needs to adopt development methods that promote economic and social progress without damaging the environment.

3. What are the problems related to Sustainable Development?

Answer: There are three major problems related to sustainable development:

1. Food

As more land is used for housing, industries, roads, and other purposes, less fertile land is available for growing crops such as wheat, rice, and other grains. Excessive use of chemical fertilisers can reduce soil quality and pollute the soil.

2. Water

Fresh water from rivers, lakes, and ponds is used for drinking, cleaning, agriculture, and other purposes. However, dumping waste and pollutants into water bodies makes them contaminated. If this continues, there may not be enough clean water for future generations.

3. Fuel

Trees are used for fuel, construction, furniture, and other purposes. Excessive cutting of trees causes deforestation and affects the climate. It can contribute to problems such as floods, extreme temperatures, and other environmental changes.

4. What steps do we have to take for Sustainable Development?

Answer: The following steps should be taken to achieve sustainable development:

  • Reduce excessive consumption of natural resources and promote conservation.
  • Recycle and reuse waste materials.
  • Manage renewable resources, especially biological resources, scientifically.
  • Plant more trees and protect forests.
  • Create green spaces and plant trees between concrete buildings.
  • Use environment-friendly and biodegradable materials.
  • Use environment-friendly technologies that improve resource efficiency.
  • Reduce pollution and conserve water and energy.

5. What are the different Sustainable Development Goals?

Answer: Sustainable Development Goals are also known as the Global Goals. The concept of sustainable development was highlighted internationally in the Brundtland Report of 1987. In 2015, the United Nations adopted 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to promote a better and more sustainable future for all.

The 17 Sustainable Development Goals are:

  1. No Poverty
  2. Zero Hunger
  3. Good Health and Well-being
  4. Quality Education
  5. Gender Equality
  6. Clean Water and Sanitation
  7. Affordable and Clean Energy
  8. Decent Work and Economic Growth
  9. Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
  10. Reduced Inequalities
  11. Sustainable Cities and Communities
  12. Responsible Consumption and Production
  13. Climate Action
  14. Life Below Water
  15. Life on Land
  16. Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions
  17. Partnerships for the Goals

6. What are some Sustainable Development initiatives taken by people in India?

Answer: Many individuals in India have taken initiatives to promote sustainable development and protect the environment.

Examples:

  • When plastic bags were banned in Mangaluru, entrepreneur Vasth Hedge developed biodegradable bags that could dissolve in hot water and degrade naturally in the environment.
  • Narayana Peesapathy developed edible cutlery made from grains. These spoons can be eaten, and if they are not eaten, they can naturally decompose in the soil.

These initiatives demonstrate how innovative ideas can help reduce waste and protect the environment.

7. What are Sustainable Processes?

Answer: Sustainable processes are methods of production or activities that meet present needs while protecting natural resources and the environment for the future.

For example, organic farming avoids or reduces the use of chemical pesticides and fertilisers. Farmers use natural fertilisers such as cow dung and other organic materials to improve soil fertility. This helps produce healthier crops and maintains soil quality for future use.

Session 2: Our Role in Sustainable Development

8. What is our role towards Sustainable Development?

Answer: Every individual, organisation, and government has an important role in achieving sustainable development. Countries should create and implement laws and policies to reduce poverty and hunger and provide people with proper healthcare, education, and employment opportunities.

We can contribute to sustainable development by:

  • Saving water and electricity.
  • Reducing waste.
  • Reusing and recycling materials.
  • Avoiding unnecessary use of plastic.
  • Planting and protecting trees.
  • Using environment-friendly products.
  • Using public transport, walking, or cycling when possible.
  • Protecting natural resources and wildlife.
  • Spreading awareness about environmental protection.
  • Following responsible consumption and production practices.

Some important Sustainable Development Goals include:

  • Quality Education
  • Clean Water and Sanitation
  • Affordable and Clean Energy
  • Decent Work and Economic Growth
  • Reduced Inequalities
  • Sustainable Cities and Communities
  • Responsible Consumption and Production
  • Life Below Water
  • Life on Land
